System for evaluating students |
|
Just what exactly is the purpose of the grading system in your class? What are your reasons for grading your students? (e.g. evaluation, motivation, sorting, communication, etc.)
The reason for grades in my class is to show students where they stand on completed assignments and for them to gauge what they need to work before the end of the quarter. Grades to students should be an indicator of what they need to pay attention to more or what they are struggling with. Grade are a way of communicating with students about what they need to talk to me about in our one on one meetings.
Just what exactly do grades (A, B, C, etc.) mean in your class? What do they measure?
A- highly proficient. The student has put forth great effort to take control of their own learning and has demonstrated mastery of a subject.
B- proficient. The student understands the concept and has put forth effort in their own learning, demonstrating knowledge on a subject.
C-Beginning to Understand. The student has put forth some effort in their own learning and is beginning to attain knowledge on a subject.
Anything below a C shows that the student needs a lot of improvement on the subject and needs to come see me as soon as possible to remedy this.
How is evaluation of your students handled? (examples: grading, record keeping system, reporting procedures)
Evaluation is shown through a point system that I will keep track of through means of grading and keeping an electronic record.
How will you differentiate, or will you grade everyone on the same scale?
Students need to show me that they understand the content. I am flexible in how I require them to display this knowledge to me. Some students are better with oral evaluation, some written, and some through other means. Knowledge can be shown in many different ways and my job as an educator is to work with students in order for them to learn, not so that my job is easier by creating a one size fits all criteria.
What exactly will you count as credit and to what percent of the total?(e.g. quizzes/tests, participation, punctuality, homework, projects, presentations, etc.)
My second choice is to use the point and percentage system as follows:
Homework : 5%
Quizzes: 10%
Tests: 25%
Journal: 10%
In Class Assessments: 35%
Essays: 15%
A 90-100%
B 80-89%
C 70-79%
D 60-69%
F Below a 60%
What kinds of homework will you assign, how often, and what will be your rationale for assigning it?
Homework is only given when I feel that it is pertinent to a student's learning. I want my students to know that when they recieve homework, it is because it is important and not just busy work. My rationale for assigning homework is that we only have a minimal amount of time together in the classroom, but there is just so much to learn in a short period of time that learning will take place outside of the classroom as well. This is part of putting effort toward their own learning.
How will you handle the problem of giving feedback in a timely manner?
Students can expect that if I give them a week to complete an assignment, then it will take me at least a week to grade it. I want my feedback to mean something because they took the time to do the assignment.
